Can You Make a Mattress Softer or Firmer Without Buying a New One?
Yes. One of the advantages of Twilight Bedding's comfort adjustment program is that a mattress that doesn't feel perfect right away may not need to be replaced entirely.
Sometimes the overall mattress is an excellent match, but the comfort layers aren't quite what you expected. Rather than purchasing a completely different mattress, Twilight Bedding may be able to adjust the comfort by changing the densities of the comfort layers based on the feedback you provide about your sleeping experience.
For example, you may feel pressure around your shoulders, notice your hips sinking more than expected or simply want a different overall feel. Your experience on the mattress helps determine what type of adjustment may provide a better balance of comfort and support.
The goal is to fine-tune the mattress so it better matches your individual comfort preferences.
Why Two People Can Have Completely Different Opinions About the Same Mattress
It's common for two people to lie on the exact same mattress and have completely different impressions. One person may describe it as wonderfully supportive, while another feels it's too firm or too soft. That's because mattress comfort is highly personal.
Several factors influence how a mattress feels, including:
- Body weight
- Shoulder width
- Hip width
- Natural spinal curvature
- Individual pressure sensitivity
- Preferred sleeping position
- The condition and feel of your previous mattress
- Personal comfort expectations
For example, a lighter sleeper may not compress the comfort layers as deeply as someone with a higher body weight. Likewise, side sleepers often need different pressure relief than back or stomach sleepers.
Your previous mattress also plays a role. If you've been sleeping on a mattress that's become heavily worn over many years, a properly supportive new mattress may initially feel firmer simply because it's providing better alignment than you're accustomed to.
This is exactly why Twilight Bedding encourages customers to allow time for adjustment before deciding whether a comfort modification is needed.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why do I need to wait 60 days before requesting an adjustment?
Most new mattresses require a break-in period. During the first several weeks, the comfort layers naturally settle while your body adjusts to the new level of support. Waiting approximately 60 days provides a better indication of how the mattress will perform over the long term.
What if my mattress feels too firm?
A mattress that initially feels too firm may become more comfortable after the break-in period. If, after following the recommended adjustment period, the comfort still isn't meeting your expectations, Twilight Bedding can discuss whether a comfort layer adjustment may be appropriate under the program.
What if my mattress feels too soft?
If your mattress feels softer than expected, the issue may involve the comfort layers rather than the mattress as a whole. Sharing your experience with the Twilight Bedding team allows them to evaluate whether adjustments may help improve overall comfort and support.
What exactly gets adjusted?
Rather than replacing the entire mattress, comfort adjustments focus on modifying the densities of the comfort layers based on the concerns you've described. This approach allows the mattress to be fine-tuned without starting over with a completely different model.
Can I bring the mattress to Twilight Bedding instead?
Yes. Twilight Bedding can pick up the mattress for a $100 fee, which includes return delivery, or you can bring the mattress to us for a $50 fee. Once we have the mattress, we can adjust the comfort layers based on whether it feels too firm or too soft.
Is there a fee for the comfort exchange?
For the first approved comfort adjustment, the only cost is the pickup or drop-off fee. The comfort layer adjustment itself is included at no additional cost. Any later adjustments are billed to include pickup, return, labor and materials.
What happens if I still want another adjustment afterward?
Every situation is unique. If you continue experiencing comfort concerns after an adjustment, speak with the Twilight Bedding team. They can review your experience and explain what options may be available under the program.
Is the comfort exchange different from the mattress warranty?
Yes. A comfort adjustment is intended to improve how the mattress feels based on your personal comfort preferences after the recommended break-in period. A manufacturer's warranty, on the other hand, addresses qualifying defects in materials or workmanship rather than personal comfort preferences. If you're unsure which applies to your situation, Twilight Bedding can help explain the difference.
