Why Is My Mattress Squeaking? How to Tell Whether the Noise Is Coming From the Mattress, Foundation or Bed Frame

A squeaking bed can be surprisingly frustrating. You roll over, sit down or get up and suddenly there is a loud creak or squeak coming from somewhere underneath you.

Your mattress is not the only possible source. The foundation, box spring, bed frame, slats, hardware and center supports can all make sounds that seem like they are coming from the mattress. Before replacing a noisy mattress, make sure the problem is actually inside the mattress itself.

Start by Isolating the Noise

Before taking the bed apart, try to narrow down where the sound is coming from while everything is still assembled. Move between different parts of the mattress, sit near the edges and change positions while listening for where the squeak is loudest.

If possible, have another person listen near the bed frame or foundation while you move around on the mattress. A squeak that seems to come from beneath you may actually be caused by a loose frame joint, a slat rubbing against the frame or movement in the foundation.

Once you have identified the general area, you can remove the mattress and inspect the components underneath. Check frame hardware for looseness, look for slats or supports that move or rub together and press on the foundation near the area where you heard the noise.

If the frame and foundation appear quiet and secure, the mattress itself may be the source.

Could the Mattress Itself Be Squeaking?

Some mattresses contain metal coils or other components that can produce noise as they move. With an innerspring or hybrid mattress, repeated compression can sometimes create sounds from the coil system or from materials interacting internally.

If the sound consistently comes from inside the mattress and occurs when you compress a particular area, the mattress may be the source.

Check for a Failing Foundation or Box Spring

A worn foundation or box spring can develop noise as internal components loosen, wood joints shift or support materials begin to deteriorate.

Look for visible damage, uneven areas, broken slats or other components that no longer feel secure. If the foundation flexes excessively or no longer supports the mattress evenly, the problem may be more than just the noise.

A deteriorating foundation can also change how the mattress feels and may contribute to uneven support or premature wear.

Inspect the Bed Frame and Hardware

Bolts, screws, brackets and other connection points can loosen gradually through normal use. When the frame shifts under weight, metal components may rub against each other and produce a squeak.

Check the connections around the frame and tighten loose hardware according to the manufacturer's instructions. Avoid overtightening, which can damage some components.

Wooden slats can create another source of noise. If a slat moves against the frame or another surface, friction can produce a creaking or squeaking sound. Inspect the slats for movement, cracks or improper positioning.

Does a Squeak Mean Something Is Broken?

Not always. Sometimes a noisy bed is simply the result of loose hardware or two surfaces rubbing together.

The noise becomes more meaningful when it is accompanied by another problem. Visible damage, excessive movement, sagging, broken slats, an uneven foundation or a noticeable change in support can indicate that part of the sleep system is no longer performing as intended.

If tightening and repositioning the supporting components does not solve the problem, or if the sound clearly comes from inside an aging mattress, replacement may eventually make more sense than continuing to troubleshoot it.
