What Does a Plush-Top Mattress Mean?

Mattress toppers have been around for eons, starting with Egyptians laying down reeds and palm leaves over sturdy sleeping surfaces for added comfort. Today, we have a variety of plush mattress toppers we can add to our beds to enhance the sleep experience.

Mattresses with a plush top layer (also sometimes called a “box-top” or “pillow-top” mattress) have extra padding made from foam sewn directly onto the top surface, creating a plump sleeping surface. This plush top can help those who sleep on their side in particular, as it provides a soft cushion that relieves the pressure points on your shoulders and hips but is still supported by a firm mattress underneath that promotes proper spinal alignment.

Pillow-Top Versus Euro-Top

Two of the primary variants of mattresses with plush tops are pillow-top and euro-top mattresses.

A pillow-top has soft padding stitched on top of the mattress with a slight gap between the primary mattress and the top. This slight gap gives it a distinctive puffy look that gives the appearance of an extra plus layer placed on top of the mattress.

Euro-tops technically have the same plush layer but it’s more seamlessly integrated and stitched around the entire edge. Someone looking at the mattress without any covers or sheets would just see a uniform mattress rather than a separate-looking top layer. There can be very slight support differences between a euro-top and a pillowtop because the euro-top is completely flush with the edges.

Both variations add a plush sleeping surface that can ease pressure points, even on firmer mattresses. Neither is inherently better than the other – it’s simply a matter of preference. You can find both euro and pillow-tops on InnerSpring mattresses as part of the Classic Rest Collection at Twilight Bedding. Because we’re a factory-direct operation, our mattresses are available in all sizes and at a lower cost than our competitors.

How Does a Pillow-Top Mattress Compare to a Latex Mattress?

The two sleeping surfaces are not mutually exclusive. Many latex mattresses do have pillow-tops, and the pillow-top can include latex foam on a latex mattress or a different type of mattress.

Latex conforms to your body without making you feel like you’re sinking like memory foam can, offering reliable support that can help relieve joint and back pain, which is why it’s typically favored by back sleepers in particular.

Latex provides a breathable sleeping surface that helps mitigate body temperature and prevent overheating better than closed-cell foam mattresses.

Memory foam in particular has a reputation for becoming permanently indented and deformed by years of use, meaning it doesn’t rise back up when the sleeper gets up. Latex maintains its shape and malleability for longer than almost every other type of mattress foam. Purchasers get more for their money with longer-lasting mattresses without sacrificing comfort when they choose latex over other foam materials.

If you prefer a firmer, more supportive mattress with excellent cooling properties, an InnerSpring mattress with a pillow-top may be ideal. You can also marry the two, like our Classic Rest 5 with a foam encased individually wrapped pocket coil topped with a combination of latex and convoluted foam and enclosed with a plush box top. This offers a firm sleeping surface with enough softness to relieve pressure points.

The Classic Rest 4 offers similar benefits, with an Ultra Soft Comfort Foam pillow top and an aloe-vera-polyester blend cover.

At Twilight Bedding, we offer a myriad of different mattresses – whether you want a pillow top on an InnerSpring, a pillow top on a latex mattress or any other combination, we’ll help you find the perfect fit for your sleep needs.

Sleep is a vital part of childhood growth, development, mood and academic performance. While it may seem convenient or cost-effective to pass down a used mattress from an older sibling or relative, the truth is that hand-me-down mattresses may do more harm than good for your child’s health and sleep quality. At Twilight Bedding, we know families are always looking for smart ways to save money, but cutting corners on your child’s sleep setup can lead to long-term consequences. Mattresses Break Down Over Time Even high-quality mattresses are not built to last forever. Over years of use, materials like foam, coils and padding begin to break down, losing their ability to provide proper support and alignment. An old mattress that has already conformed to someone else’s body is unlikely to offer the spinal support growing kids and teens need. Children and teenagers are constantly developing. Their spines, muscles and joints need a mattress that promotes healthy alignment and adapts to their growing bodies. A sagging or worn-out mattress can contribute to poor posture, disrupted sleep and even back pain in younger sleepers. Hygiene and Allergens Are a Real Concern Another key reason to skip the hand-me-down mattress? Hygiene. Older mattresses can harbor years of built-up dust, allergens, dead skin cells, sweat, bacteria and even mold, especially if they’ve been stored improperly. Young sleepers are more vulnerable to allergens and respiratory issues, which can be made worse by sleeping on a used mattress. If your child suffers from allergies or asthma, a secondhand bed could quietly be making things worse night after night. And while it may not be pleasant to think about, bed bugs or dust mites are also a risk with used mattresses, especially if they’ve changed hands or locations multiple times. Buying new helps you avoid all these potential health hazards. Lack of Support Affects More Than Just Sleep Sleep quality is just as important as the number of hours spent in bed. If a mattress doesn’t support your child properly, it can lead to tossing and turning, body aches and even a lack of deep, restorative sleep. This has a direct impact on: Mood and emotional regulation School performance and focus Physical development and immune function Behavior and energy levels Teens, in particular, are going through rapid physical and hormonal changes that require consistent, quality rest. Giving them a mattress that’s past its prime can hinder both their physical and emotional well-being. One Size Does Not Fit All Just because a mattress worked for one person doesn’t mean it will work for someone else. Factors like weight, sleep position and sensitivity vary significantly between individuals. Your growing child or teen may need something firmer, softer or cooler than the person who used the mattress before them. When you buy new, you can choose the right size (Twin XL, Full, etc.), firmness and materials that best support your child’s current stage of development and continues to serve them well for years to come. A New Mattress is an Investment in Their Future Think of a mattress like you would a pair of shoes. You wouldn’t hand down worn-out shoes and expect them to support someone through miles of running or walking. A mattress is no different. I's a foundation for healthy rest, which affects every part of your child’s life. At Twilight Bedding, we carry a full range of affordable, high-quality mattresses perfect for kids, teens and college-bound young adults.
