Five Things Every Mattress Should Do

Comfort matters, but a mattress has a much bigger responsibility than simply feeling soft or firm. It needs to support your body properly throughout the night so you can sleep comfortably and wake up without unnecessary stiffness or soreness.

Some signs that a mattress is no longer doing its job are obvious, such as a visible dip or sagging edge. Others are easier to miss. Changes in how you sleep, where you feel pressure or how your body feels in the morning can all point to problems with the mattress beneath you.

1. Keep Your Spine Properly Aligned

When spinal alignment is compromised, lower back pain is one of the most common results. You may notice stiffness first thing in the morning that gradually improves after you've been up and moving for a while. Others experience persistent discomfort throughout the day because their muscles spent the entire night compensating for poor support.

How to test it: When you wake up, pay attention to how your back feels. If you routinely need several minutes of stretching before you feel comfortable or your back pain eases after walking around, your mattress may not be keeping your spine properly aligned.

2. Relieve Pressure at Your Shoulders and Hips

Without adequate pressure relief, you may wake up with sore shoulders, aching hips, numb arms or tingling hands. Over time, pressure points can cause you to toss and turn more frequently as your body searches for a more comfortable position.

How to test it: Lie on your mattress in your normal sleeping position for about 15 minutes while you're awake. If your shoulder, hip or arm begins feeling numb, sore or uncomfortable, your mattress may be creating excessive pressure instead of relieving it.

3. Maintain Its Shape After Years of Use

Visible indentations often mean the materials are no longer supporting your weight evenly. Once the surface begins breaking down, your spine and joints are forced into awkward positions that can lead to soreness and restless sleep.

How to test it: Remove all bedding and look across the surface of your mattress from the side. If you can clearly see dips where you usually sleep or if a long straight object placed across the mattress reveals noticeable gaps, those body impressions may be affecting your sleep quality.

4. Allow You to Move Naturally

Some mattresses allow sleepers to sink so deeply that rolling over requires extra effort. This can interrupt your sleep without you even realizing it, leaving you feeling less rested in the morning.

Restricted movement can also make existing joint pain or stiffness feel worse because your body remains in uncomfortable positions longer than it should.

How to test it: While lying on your mattress, roll from your back to your side and then onto your stomach. If repositioning feels more like rolling out of a ditch than simply turning over, or you have to push hard with your arms to move, your mattress may be limiting natural movement.

5. Isolate Motion Without Sacrificing Support

Motion isolation shouldn't come at the expense of proper support. The best mattresses minimize motion transfer while still keeping both sleepers comfortably supported.

If you're waking up every time your partner changes positions, gets up during the night or returns to bed, your mattress may not be absorbing movement effectively.

How to test it: Lie still on one side of the mattress while your partner rolls over several times, changes positions and gets in and out of bed on the other side. Some movement is normal, but if you feel the mattress noticeably shift, bounce or dip beneath you each time they move, motion may be transferring across the bed more than it should.

When Your Mattress Stops Doing Its Job

If you're regularly experiencing sore shoulders, lower back pain, visible body impressions, restless sleep or frequent nighttime disturbances from your partner's movements, your mattress may no longer be providing the support and comfort you need.

Rather than simply choosing the softest or firmest option available, look for a mattress designed to address each of these essential functions. Proper support, pressure relief, durability, ease of movement and motion isolation all work together to create healthier, more restorative sleep.
